California-based bookmaker linked to Ohtani's interpreter shares his story

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Shohei Ohtani’s interpreter, Ippei Mitzuhara, was allegedly concerned in an unlawful playing operation with Southern California-based bookmaker Mathew Bowyer, resulting in an FBI investigation.

Mitzuhara is accused of stealing over $16 million from Ohtani’s account whereas Ohtani performed for the Los Angeles Angels. Mitzuhara, who primarily gambled on obscure soccer matches, is believed to have stolen the cash from Ohtani’s checking account.

Bowyer, a major gambler himself, misplaced hundreds of thousands in Las Vegas and cooperated with the investigation, receiving a one-year jail sentence. He has since written a e book about his experiences titled “Recalibrate.”

Bowyer additionally informed 8 Information Now reporter Ron Futrell that he believes 50% {of professional} athletes guess on sporting occasions.

“I’ve said this many times, it’s at least 50%. Think about how competitive they are, how bored they get, you know, they obviously are amazing, competitive athletes, and at the end of the day, there’s a lot of downtime. And in that downtime, what’s wrong with betting on stuff to make things more interesting?” Bower mentioned. 

Mitzuhara is serving a 5-year sentence in jail whereas Ohtani, who was cleared of any wrongdoing, is now a star pitcher and designated hitter for the playoff-bound Los Angeles Dodgers.
