After Las Vegas' hottest summer season ever, Rosen seeks to categorise excessive warmth as main catastrophe

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — After Las Vegas’ hottest summer season ever, Democratic Nevada Sen. Jacky Rosen is introducing laws to declare excessive warmth a serious catastrophe.

The Excessive Warmth Emergency Act would add excessive temperatures to a listing of disasters eligible to obtain federal support, Rosen’s workplace stated. The president has the authority to declare disasters for fires, floods, hurricanes and different pure catastrophes.

To date this summer season, 29 folks have died in Southern Nevada from heat-related diseases, a Clark County spokesperson stated earlier this week.

“Last year, more than 500 people died in one single county in Nevada from heat-related illnesses,” Rosen stated in an announcement. “Current federal policy ignores the physical and health risks that such extremely high temperatures have on our communities, which is why I’m introducing a bill to change that. By classifying extreme heat as a major disaster, our communities will be able to receive the federal funding needed to respond and prepare for future extreme heat events.”

On July 7, 2024, a climate station at Harry Reid Worldwide Airport marked its hottest temperature ever — 120 levels. The summer season of 2024 marked the most popular ever for town, information stated.

Democratic Arizona Sen. Ruben Gallego and Democratic Texas Rep. Sylvia Garcia joined Rosen in introducing the measure.
