LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A chunk of Las Vegas historical past will shine once more later this month.

The Neon Museum introduced it should relight the one surviving public signal from the legendary Dunes Lodge and On line casino on Friday, Sept. 26. The restored entrance signal, bought by the museum in 2002, is taken into account a misplaced icon of American popular culture.

The Dunes opened in 1955 and was dubbed the “Miracle within the Desert.” Extravagant reveals, superb eating, and a towering 180-foot neon pylon had been all a part of the resort.

“The Dunes Hotel and Casino holds deep significance in our family’s history,” Roger Thomas mentioned. “My father, E. Parry Thomas, along with his partner Jerry Mack, made the loans that allowed The Dunes to expand. When they helped change state and federal laws to allow publicly traded corporations to own casinos, The Dunes became the first Las Vegas property acquired under the new framework. It marked the start of a transformative era in gaming, and years later, the property was imploded to make way for Bellagio, my first luxury hotel design. The Dunes was both a finale and a beginning.”

In 1993, the Dunes grew to become the primary resort to be imploded on the Strip, drawing a crowd of greater than 200,000.

The relighting ceremony can even acknowledge the individuals who formed its legacy.

Native artisans at Hartlauer Indicators spent 5 months rigorously restoring the artifact, which included recreating its unique animation, repairing its iconic onion dome silhouette, and matching its distinctive orange façade. Tim and Amy Hunter will sponsor a champagne toast to comply with the relighting.

“This restoration represents everything The Neon Museum stands for: preserving the artistry, ambition, and bold spirit that built Las Vegas,” Aaron Berger, Government Director of The Neon Museum, mentioned.

The relighting will give Las Vegas residents and guests a uncommon likelihood to see the town’s previous shine as soon as once more, a reminder of how the Dunes helped form the skyline and the way forward for the Strip.
