LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Researchers on the College of Nevada, Las Vegas, have made a big breakthrough in autism analysis.

The UNLV researchers uncovered a connection to a kind of neuromuscular illness referred to as myotonic dystrophy.

“This research is providing an important piece of information,” Łukasz Sznajder, geneticist and professor at UNLV, stated. “It’s showing a pathway from the mutation in the gene to the outcome, which is the development of autism.”

The latest research was printed on April twenty first in Nature Neuroscience. Sznajder defined that the brand new discovery will help with diagnoses and prevention.

“We can double up therapeutic strategies to fix what’s going wrong, in a sense, to prevent the development of autism,” Sznajder defined. “It will definitely help with diagnoses, especially for people who are already diagnosed with myotonic dystrophy type 1.”

Sznajder, who’s initially from Poland, began his work on the college in 2023. He stated the latest developments in analysis are rewarding.

“Just knowing something that no one knew before, it’s just a very exciting feeling. And we know that with each and every discovery we’re making, the world is getting better,” Sznajder stated.

Funding is a crucial think about persevering with growth on this enviornment, Sznajder defined.

“I think autism requires attention, and I think the best way to bring more attention to certain research problems, like mental health or general health problems, is to provide more resources like funding,” Sznajder stated.

In line with the researcher, there at the moment are scientific trials in place, and he anticipates the drugs will observe years down the road.
