Nevada's Cave Lake refilling after 5-year undertaking on 90-year-old dam

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — It is going to take an estimated 9 months to refill Cave Lake after the completion of repairs on a 90-year-old dam that began in 2019, based on engineers with the Nevada Division of Wildlife (NDOW).

The lake is a well-liked escape within the mountains 14 miles southeast of Ely in White Pine County, not removed from Nice Basin Nationwide Park. Earlier than work started, the park averaged 63,000 guests every year. The campgrounds at Cave Lake State Park have remained open whereas the undertaking moved ahead.

“This is a big step in turning Cave Lake back into a destination spot for visitors from all over the state,” NDOW Director Alan Jenne mentioned. “A lot of people and a lot of different agencies have worked very hard on this project and we’re finally starting to see the results. It’s all very exciting.”

Because it refills, the lake may have 200 synthetic habitat constructions that can assist set up wholesome fish populations. NDOW will re-establish brown trout and rainbow trout populations to the lake in addition to introduce smallmouth bass, based on NDOW Fisheries biologist Heath Korell.

Work started in October 2019 and was coordinated with the Nevada Public Works Division, the Nevada Division of Water Assets, and the Nevada Division of State Parks. The undertaking was made doable by funding from Preserve Nevada, Heritage, and state and federal contributions.

The dam was initially in-built 1939 to retailer water for ranching in Steptoe Valley, based on Nevada State Parks. A 1961 undertaking enlarged the dam to 364 toes in size and 60 toes in top.
