LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — With the looming menace of hen flu farmers at Las Vegas Livestock, an animal farm within the valley, are taking heed, checking on the chickens each morning to verify they’re wholesome.

Las Vegas Livestock‘s operation is focused on sustainability, feeding their animals food scraps from the Strip. They’ve obtained goats, pigs, cows, and chickens.

One among their issues is migratory birds making their method by way of the winter.

Thus far, there aren’t any points with their chickens, and the flock is small.  However, farm supervisor Sarah Stallard stated, if a chick will get sick, it’s a threat for all of them.

“The state vet’s going to set that protocol. So, he would either tell us quarantine them or even potentially, cull the whole flock,” Stallard stated.

Fowl flu and the slower winter laying season are among the present strains on the egg market. Stallard’s recommendation for the scarcity — give it time.

“Producers are trying to do the best by their animals, to get that production back up so they can keep feeding people,” she stated. “So it’s best to not panic and, and kind of just, wait it out.”

The Las Vegas livestock flock lays about 15 dozen eggs a day. It’s a small operation, however throughout occasions like these — small operations will help.

“Reach out to any local farmers that you have to is a good way to, just be closer to your food supply if you’re if you’re concerned about that,” Stallard stated.
