LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Intersections throughout the Las Vegas valley have gotten more and more busy and harmful.

Final month, Metro unveiled a plan to step up enforcement in hopes of saving lives. The division revealed the valley’s 12 most harmful intersections with a plan to ramp up enforcement and lift group consciousness.

“Officers can’t be everywhere, so we need to work together,” Lt. Cody Fulwiler with LVMPD’s Site visitors Bureau mentioned.

That message is the guts of Metro’s new staff known as Life Squads, which stands for “lives improved, fatalities eradicated.” The group focuses on the 12 most harmful intersections throughout the valley utilizing knowledge and enforcement to focus on the place and when crashes occur most.

Lt. Fulwiler mentioned officers are zeroing in on three predominant causes of lethal crashes.

“The trends that we’re seeing, and the top causal factors continue to be speed, failure to yield the right of way, and impairment, whether that’s by drugs or by alcohol,” Lt. Fulwiler mentioned.

And for these caught driving dangerously, Metro’s warning is obvious.

“You are driving in a careless or reckless manner, then you will get a ticket, or you will go to jail. Either way, your vehicle will be towed,” Lt. Fulwiler mentioned.

Since launching the brand new enforcement plan final month, there have been 16 deadly collisions throughout the valley, together with three 12-year-old kids killed in separate crashes up to now three weeks.

“The biggest thing in each one of those cases is slowing down, paying attention, and not driving under the influence,” Lt. Fulwiler mentioned.

From Oct. 1 to Dec. 31 of final yr, Metro noticed 47 fatalities. As we transfer into the busy vacation season, Metro hopes stronger enforcement and group engagement can forestall much more tragedy.

“Those are 47 people that didn’t get to have Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas,” Lt. Fulwiler mentioned. “Our enforcement efforts are there, we’ve made changes to that, but we do need the community to also support that and hold themselves accountable as we go into these holiday months. Save a life even if it’s yours.”

Officers say one of the best ways to stop crashes is to decelerate, concentrate, and comply with the foundations of the street.
