Las Vegas man sentenced to jail in stepfather's manslaughter case

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A Las Vegas man charged within the loss of life of his stepfather was sentenced to 4 to 10 years in jail, as a part of a plea settlement on Thursday.

Alex Renteria, 23, was charged with manslaughter for the loss of life of Christopher Brian Harris. 

On October 22, 2024, Renteria accused Harris of throwing away his toiletries, which led to him pulling out a gun.

“I told him to leave me alone, and I was scared. I picked up a firearm to make him back away. I never wanted to shoot him,” Renteria stated throughout his assertion in entrance of the courtroom. The room was full of household and mates in assist of each Renteria and Harris. 

Renteria and his lawyer informed his facet of the story in courtroom, and claimed there was a tumultuous relationship, citing his stepfather had anger points and a consuming downside. 

“I bought a lock for my bedroom door, because I never felt safe there,” Renteria stated. “I kept to myself, sometimes even urinating in bottles in my room, so I didn’t have to leave.”

“On the night of the tragedy, things felt worse than ever. He knew I was hurt and upset. He came downstairs to my room, getting aggressive in that moment,” Renteria stated.

In the meantime, Harris’s organic kids painted a dueling narrative of their father.

“No matter if you’re his child, his friend, his employee, his neighbor, or just someone he just met, he’s not just important to us, he’s important to everybody around him, and that includes Alex,” Harris, the sufferer’s organic son stated. “My father loved him as a son, and I find it disgusting that you would sit here, and slander him and say he was a drunkard,” 

Renteria and his mom, Brittany Harris, each expressed feeling that Harris handled Renteria in another way from the opposite kids.
