Jury awards $34M to girl who sued Las Vegas police for framing her

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A federal grand jury has awarded over $34 million to a lady who sued the police division and two of its detectives for framing her. 

Kirstin Lobato sued for fabrication of proof and intentional infliction of emotional misery associated to her 16-year-long incarceration for the 2001 homicide of a homeless man she was later cleared of killing. She was launched from jail in 2018. In 2019, she filed a civil lawsuit in federal court docket, which started on Dec. 2.

The jury started deliberating Wednesday morning and notified the federal decide, Richard F. Boulware II that it had completed its deliberations shortly after 1:00 p.m. Thursday. 

The jury present in favor of Lobato on all counts and he or she cried tears of pleasure as the choice was learn.

The $34 million awarded are compensatory damages for the 16 years she spent in jail.

In addition they awarded $10,000 in opposition to every detective, Thomas Thowsen and James Larochelle, each now retired, for punitive damages.
