BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — Members of the Irish-language rap group Kneecap had been banned from getting into Hungary forward of their scheduled efficiency on the fashionable Sziget Pageant as authorities argued the musicians’ presence within the nation would represent a threat to nationwide safety.

The Belfast trio, scheduled to play on Sziget’s closing day on Aug. 11, is thought for anarchic power, satirical lyrics and use of symbolism related to the Irish republican motion, which seeks to unite Northern Eire, at present a part of the U.Ok., with the Republic of Eire.

The group has confronted criticism for lyrics laden with expletives and drug references and for political statements seeming to glorify militant teams like Hamas and Hezbollah.

Kneecap has accused critics of attempting to silence the band due to its help for the Palestinian trigger all through Israel’s conflict in Gaza and say they don’t help Hezbollah and Hamas nor condone violence.

Hungary’s immigration authority, the Nationwide Directorate-Normal for Aliens Policing, revealed decrees on Thursday declaring Kneecap members Naoise Ó Cairealláin, J.J. Ó Dochartaigh and Liam Óg ÓhAnnaidh can be banned from Hungary’s territory for 3 years since their “entry and stay constitute a serious threat to national security.”

Authorities spokesman Zoltán Kovács wrote on social platform X that the choice to ban Kneecap was because of “antisemitic hate speech and open praise for Hamas and Hezbollah.”

Hungarian authorities and different teams had earlier pushed Sziget Pageant to cancel the band’s efficiency. Hungary’s minister for European affairs, János Bóka, famous the federal government’s “zero-tolerance” coverage towards antisemitism in a July 11 letter to the competition’s organizers.

Lots of of figures from Hungary’s music and cultural group even have signed a petition calling for Kneecap’s efficiency to be cancelled.

Pageant representatives mentioned the choice was “unnecessary and regrettable” and will serve to “not only damage the reputation of Sziget, but also negatively affect Hungary’s standing worldwide.”

“Sziget Festival’s values mean we condemn hate speech, while guaranteeing the fundamental right to artistic freedom of expression for every performer,” organizers wrote in a press release. “Cancel culture and cultural boycotts are not the solution.”

Kneecap carried out in April on the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Pageant in California, the place they accused Israel of committing genocide in opposition to the Palestinians enabled by the U.S. authorities. That sparked requires the rappers’ U.S. visas to be revoked and several other Kneecap gigs have since been canceled consequently.
