LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Culinary Union employees took to the streets exterior Virgin Inns Las Vegas on Saturday, holding indicators and staging a picket line in response to the lodge’s request for arbitration.
“We have never settled a strike or contract dispute by arbitration in the history of Las Vegas,” Ted Pappageorge, Secretary-Treasurer of the Culinary Staff Union, shared with 8 Information Now.
Virgin Inns Las Vegas goes to nice lengths to forestall the Culinary Union from invading their house, even developing a turf wall to defend lodge friends from the sight of the strike line. Regardless of these efforts, the unionized employees stay steadfast of their struggle.
Saturday evening, the Union held an occasion for his or her Cuban neighborhood, referred to as, “Noche Cubana.”
“We have a large, active, and strong Cuban population within our members…so this is a treat for them to celebrate their culture,” Pappageorge stated.
As for the strike, Virgin employees say they’re annoyed that it is come to this.
“It really does surprise me that we are going into the new year, and we are still continuing the strike line. It should have never happened in the first place,” kitchen employees worker Jovani Guerrero Lopez stated.
Others shared that they do not really feel valued and anticipate extra from the corporate.
“Some people are getting paid $300 dollars a day and yet the company refuses to pay us the raise we deserve. 30 cents isn’t enough. Our counterparts on the strip are making 4 dollars more an hour,” Isabel Sanz shared.
“Virgin Hotels Las Vegas requested that the Culinary Union leadership join us in arbitration, and we sincerely hope they will accept and participate in good faith. The Culinary Union leadership’s acceptance would allow Team Members to begin returning to work prior to the holidays. We are eager to put this behind us by reaching an equitable agreement that is financially sustainable for the property while benefiting all of our team members.”
