The Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC)  is demanding an apology from the Home Republicans’ marketing campaign arm after it falsely portrayed the CHC’s chairman as an “illegal immigrant.”

The Nationwide Congressional Marketing campaign Committee (NRCC) deleted the controversial social media submit on Friday. However the unannounced transfer did little to appease the Hispanic Caucus, which is asking the NRCC to go additional.

“You can’t sweep this under the rug,” the group wrote on X. “We demand a retraction and an apology, not a mulligan.”

The NRCC stirred the controversy on Wednesday when it posted a message attacking Rep. Adriano Espaillat (D-N.Y.), the top of the CHC, over his Spanish-language response to President Trump’s handle to Congress the evening earlier than.

“Democrats literally chose an illegal immigrant to give their response to President Trump’s address,” the NRCC posted on X. “Predictably, this radical called Trump’s presidency a “reign of terror.”

“Democrats couldn’t be more disconnected from the American people.”

The declare was not true. Espaillat was born within the Dominican Republic, and lived illegally in the US for a quick interval within the mid-Nineteen Sixties — when he was roughly 10 years outdated — after his household’s vacationer visas expired. However they obtained inexperienced playing cards inside a yr, granting authorized standing, and Espaillat, 70, turned a U.S. citizen greater than 40 years in the past.

The NRCC submit rapidly sparked denouncements from Democrats, together with Home Minority Chief Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), who didn’t pull punches.

“These people are disgusting,” he wrote on X.

Individually, Rep. Sylvia Garcia (D-Texas), the CHC whip, crafted a decision condemning the whole GOP management group “for calling into question the citizenship of their colleague.”

On Thursday, an NRCC spokesman defended the “illegal immigrant” declare as merely a press release of “facts.” On Friday, nevertheless, the group quietly deleted the submit — a improvement first reported by NOTUS.

A NRCC spokesman mentioned Democrats have blown the episode out of proportion, arguing that the Democrats are merely making an attempt to shift consideration away from the controversy surrounding their protests of Trump’s speech on Tuesday, together with Rep. Al Inexperienced’s (D-Texas) outstanding heckling of the president.

“We refuse to let Democrats distract from their disastrous Joint Handle antics,”  NRCC Communications Director Will Kiley mentioned in a press release. “Solely a handful of them voted to censure Al Inexperienced whereas refusing to apologize for his or her disgraceful habits towards President Trump, American staff, and victims of violent crime.

“Their antics on the Home flooring have been much more egregious than any tweet.”

The group declined to touch upon the CHC’s demand for an apology.

Espaillat has extra sinister theories concerning the Republicans’ technique. He mentioned the GOP, underneath Trump, has merely put a goal on the backs of all immigrants within the nation, authorized or not.

“[The] Republican Party, has been invaded by xenophobes and anybody that doesn’t look exactly like them, they consider to be an illegal,” he mentioned.
