LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — On Wednesday, nationwide, regional, and state leaders gathered for the Fentanyl Consciousness Summit to debate the most recent on fentanyl use and its affect on the group.
“We now are about 10 years into this crisis,” Keith Carter, director of the Excessive-Depth Drug Trafficking Program, stated. “We didn’t see fentanyl before 2015, and now what we’re seeing is a very cheap drug that is readily available on the street, both in pill and powder form.”
The summit aimed to boost public consciousness in regards to the risks of opioid medication in our group.
“Fatal overdose deaths are increasing in Southern Nevada and in Nevada, when nationally, they’re going down,” Lisa Corrado, assistant metropolis supervisor, and chief technique officer for the Metropolis of Henderson, stated. “We also have an increase in non-fatal overdoses that leave life-long impacts on people.”
Metropolis and county leaders expressed their considerations and introduced analysis on the widespread use and overdose of opioids amongst each vacationers and locals. In accordance with Dr. David Hart, an Emergency Doctor at Mountainview Hospital, these aged 30 to 40 are probably the most at-risk group for fentanyl overdose.
“We’ve watched this go from being not something you see frequently to something you see if not every day, every week,” Dr. Hart stated. “It’s really tragic.”
Town’s fentanyl consciousness marketing campaign known as “Don’t Risk It All.” Dr. Hart says fentanyl can have lasting results on one’s bodily and psychological well being.
“We know that people who have an opioid use disorder have a higher risk of depression and suicidal thoughts,” Dr. Hart stated. “People who have overdosed at one point, intentionally or unintentionally, are 18% more likely to die of suicide.”
That’s if it doesn’t declare your life first.
“It takes a tiny bit of fentanyl to kill you,” Carter stated.
