LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A study found that Nevada has one of the worst school systems in the country for a variety of reasons.

“Getting enough funding is essential for a productive school system, but simply having more money doesn’t guarantee success,” WalletHub Analyst Chip Lupo said. “How funds are applied also plays a big role in how good a school system is, as does the quality of educators, other professionals and the curriculum. In addition, schools need to focus not just on test scores but also on making sure that students feel safe, comfortable and cared for.”

In order to determine which states had the best and worst school systems, WalletHub analyzed each state and the District of Columbia across 32 factors, such as performance, funding, safety, class size and instructor credentials.

The study found the five states with the best school systems were Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Jersey, New Hampshire, and Wisconsin.

Nevada ranked at no. 45 on the list, landing a score of 43.46 points out of 100. The top state, Massachusetts, got a score of 74.74.

The study found that Nevada ranked particularly low when it came to pupil-teacher ratio, meaning how many students were assigned per teacher, median ACT scores, math test scores, reading test scores, and percentage of threatened/injured high school students.

Additionally, Nevada landed at no. 26 on the list when it comes to its dropout rate.
