Senate Majority Chief John Thune (R-S.D.) mentioned Republican management workers is reviewing “protocol” about the potential for former Vice President Dick Cheney mendacity in state within the Capitol Rotunda.

“I think we’re checking the protocols on that. I’ll let you know soon,” Thune informed reporters Tuesday when requested about honoring the previous vp by inserting his flag-draped casket on the heart of the rotunda, an honor normally reserved for former presidents.

The final particular person to lie in state was former President Jimmy Carter in 2025.

Earlier than that, former Democratic Senate Majority Chief Harry Reid (Nev.) and former Republican Senate Majority Chief Bob Dole (Kan.) lay in state in 2022 and 2021, respectively.

The final former vp who didn’t later rise to the presidency to lie in state was former Vice President Hubert Humphrey, who was accorded the honour in 1978. He held the function of majority whip within the Senate.

Former President George H.W. Bush, who served as vp to former President Reagan earlier than being elected president in 1988, lay in state in December 2018.
