Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) on Sunday mentioned the “No Kings” protests in opposition to President Trump this weekend have been a “stunt” created by Democrats as a result of they wanted “cover” amid the continuing authorities shutdown.

In an interview on ABC Information’s “This Week,” Johnson urged there was no want for Trump’s critics to affix No Kings demonstrations this weekend, saying the actual fact that the protests befell is proof that they weren’t essential.

“The irony of the message is pretty clear for everyone. If President Trump was a king, the government would be open right now. If President Trump was a king, they would not have been able to engage in that free speech exercise out on the [National] Mall, by the way, which was open because President Trump hasn’t closed it,” the Speaker mentioned.

“They needed a stunt. They needed a show. Chuck Schumer … needs cover right now. He’s closed the government down because he needs political cover, and this was a part of it,” he added, referring to Senate Democratic Chief Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.).

Thousands and thousands of People protested the president and his administration on Saturday at roughly 2,600 demonstrations that befell in all 50 states, in small cities and main cities, together with New York, Chicago and Los Angeles.

Many Democratic lawmakers, together with Schumer and Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, joined the activists, whereas Republicans largely backed Trump and criticized the demonstrations.

The protests got here after almost three weeks of a shutdown, with no signal of a deal within the works to reopen the federal government. Democrats have insisted that the improved Inexpensive Care Act subsidies, that are set to run out on the finish of the yr, be prolonged earlier than they comply with help the GOP plan to reopen the federal government.

“We congratulate them on an apparently violent-free, free speech exercise. I was a First Amendment lawyer for 20 years. We defend that right,” Johnson mentioned.
