Nevada governor names new superintendent of public instruction

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) —  Governor Joe Lombardo introduced Monday, Nevada’s new Superintendent of Public Instruction, Dr. Victor Wakefield.

“Victor is the right leader at the right time for Nevada’s public education system,” Lombardo stated. “He received a unanimous recommendation from the State Board of Education—a testament to his qualifications, vision, and commitment to improving outcomes for all students.”

Wakefield started his profession as a center faculty English instructor in Gary, Indiana, and later recruited academics nationwide by Educate For America (TFA). He led coaching for 250 educators in Clark County, impacting greater than 15,000 college students. 

“Congratulations to Dr. Wakefield on his selection as Nevada Superintendent of Public Instruction,” CCSD Superintendent Jhone Ebert stated in a press release. “I sit up for collaborating with him to raise up all college students. Working collectively, I’m assured we will maintain the momentum transferring in the precise path for Nevada college students and educators.”

Over 16 years at TFA, Wakefield served as Government Director of TFA-Las Vegas and Nationwide Vice President for Areas, overseeing 16 areas. In 2020, he managed TFA’s pandemic response, onboarding practically 3,000 academics.

He additionally served on Nevada’s State Board of Schooling from 2015 to 2017.

State Board of Schooling President Dr. Katie Dockweiler praised the appointment, saying Wakefield’s expertise will “promote collaborative conversations to improve outcomes for students.”

Dr. Wakefield’s appointment takes impact on Oct. 27.
