Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.), the non-voting member representing the nation’s capital in Congress, launched laws on Tuesday that may require Nationwide Guard troops to put on physique cameras as they patrol Washington, D.C.

Norton stated in an announcement that the invoice goals to “promote transparency in the troops’ interactions with the public and protect the public and the troops.”

“The Trump administration has deployed more than 2,000 troops to D.C. who are wholly unaccountable to D.C. residents. Even the D.C. National Guard troops are under the president’s control and do not report to the D.C. government,” Norton stated.

“This unwarranted deployment politicizes the military and does a disservice to members of the National Guard, who are being taken from their own families and jobs, and to D.C. residents, who neither requested nor consented to it,” she continued.

“Body cameras would promote transparency and protect both the National Guard troops and D.C. residents from allegations of inappropriate or unlawful behavior,” she added.

The invoice would require the Nationwide Guards’ participation in a program just like the Metropolitan Police Division’s (MPD) “well-established” body-word digicam program, which ensures the preservation and disclosure of the footage, Norton stated.

Trump deployed a whole lot of Guard members within the District earlier this month and federalized the native police division as a part of a federal takeover aimed toward cracking down on crime. A number of states — together with Mississippi, Ohio and West Virginia — have additionally despatched personnel.

The Pentagon introduced Monday that some Nationwide Guard troops in Washington, D.C. started carrying service-issue weapons Sunday night. Protection Secretary Pete Hegseth signed an order final week authorizing the transfer.

Democrats have sharply criticized the continued efforts, and metropolis officers have shared knowledge exhibiting crime had already been lowering in recent times in a number of classes.

Trump has challenged these figures, nevertheless, and has accused town of manufacturing “fake crime numbers in order to create a false illusion of safety,” whereas defending his administration’s efforts for making the District “safe again.”
