LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — It’s been virtually 10 years since Nevada legalized leisure marijuana use, sparking a booming new business. UNLV’s Hashish Coverage Institute explored how the hashish and hemp business has advanced.

Final yr, Nevada’s hashish gross sales introduced in $829 million with $120 million in taxes. Whereas barely down from earlier years, Nevada nonetheless ranks among the many prime hashish economies within the U.S.

Based on this yr’s UNLV Hashish Coverage Institute report “Where Will Weed Win?”, Nevada ranks within the prime 5 of the state weed rankings. California is fourth, Michigan third, Oregon second, and the highest spot goes to Oklahoma, primarily based on the report by UC Davis Hashish Economics Group Director Dr. Robin Goldstein.

“Nevada is the smallest state by far in the top ten in terms of population,” Dr. Goldstein stated.

Goldstein stated Nevada’s success comes from low manufacturing prices, ample land, and future tourism alternatives.

“Nevada is exploring that and trying to figure it out,” Dr. Goldstein stated. “It’s a work in progress everywhere with consumption lounges, figuring out how to reach tourists, how to integrate cannabis with hospitality.”

Even with Nevada’s excessive nationwide rating, Planet 13, the world’s largest dispensary, situated close to Desert Inn Highway and Sammy Davis Jr. Drive, seen some adjustments in demand.

“Demand is down significantly over the last few years. Two and a half years ago, we were making over $70 million per month, and presently the market is sitting at $50 million per month,” Chris Wren, Vice President of Operations for Planet 13, stated. “That can be contributed to other declines you’re seeing in the economy from tourism [and] people having generally less free capital to spend.”

Wren stated he believes the business will rebound as tourism and the economic system enhance.

“As those two market conditions start to improve, I do see a lot of lift for not only Nevada [or] Las Vegas, but the cannabis industry itself,” stated Wren.

Dr. Goldstein stated the hashish business nonetheless has room to develop, particularly if it’s built-in with gaming and tourism in Las Vegas.

“Nevada is all about the upside,” Dr. Goldstein stated. “The upside there, especially if gaming and cannabis and the Las Vegas Strip can be broadened to the market in a real way.”

“We’re all expecting some growth,” Wren stated. “We’ve seen a downtrend over the last few years. We’re starting to see some upticks in the market; we’re starting to see a lot of consolidation.”

Proper now, Nevada legislation prohibits retains the gaming and hashish industries separate, however specialists at UNLV’s Hashish Coverage Institute say the state has an excellent alternative to benefit from its full tourism market.
