SAN DIEGO (AP) — The Grid took over Comedian-Con on Friday, bringing the celebrities of the brand new “Tron: Ares” movies to unveil footage and reveal the story behind the franchise’s third film.

The movie stars Jared Leto, Jeff Bridges, Greta Lee and Jodie Turner-Smith because the story brings the digital atmosphere of the Grid, full with gentle cylces, into the actual world.

Disney confirmed off a number of minutes of footage, together with a light-weight cycle chase scene in the actual world and one other within the red-hued Grid. Propelling the onscreen motion is a propulsive 9 Inch Nails soundtrack.

“It’s fun to see it on the big screen for the first time,” mentioned director Joachim Rønning.

Disney turned the Corridor H panel right into a spectacle, with pink lasers filling the room and characters in fits with pink lights getting into the huge corridor.

Requested what excited her about becoming a member of the “Tron” franchise, Lee responded: “I just wanted to ride a light cycle.”

Leto spoke affectionately concerning the unique saying: “This movie just grabbed a hold of me and took me to a place that I’d never been before. It kind of rattled my imagination and it kind of showed me what was possible in the world.”

He praised Bridges and Steven Lisberger, who created “Tron” and directed the 1982 unique. Lisberger attended Friday’s panel and laid out his case for why the franchise stays related.

“My feeling about ‘Tron’ is that the most important thing is we kick this technology around artistically before it kicks us around,” Lisberger mentioned.

“I am weary about hearing all the grim news about the future,” he mentioned, and the way in which he thinks it may be averted is to “inspire young people what can be done with this technology.”

Friday’s panel ended with the premiere of the music video for “As Alive as You Need Me to Be,” the primary 9 Inch Nails tune from the soundtrack.

“Tron” has by no means been within the high tier of sci-fi franchises. The unique 1982 movie starring Bridges as Kevin Flynn, a person sucked into a pc vortex generally known as the Grid, was admired for its ground-breaking idea and results, and was a modest hit with reasonably good evaluations.

Maybe extra importantly, it gained a cult following and has been maintained sufficient in cultural reminiscence to stay a beneficial property for Disney.

The 2010 movie “Tron: Legacy,” starring Bridges and Garrett Hedlund, made greater than $400 million globally. A TV present that adopted, “Tron: Uprising,” lasted only one season.

Rønning has helmed different Disney franchise movies: 2017’s “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” and 2019’s “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.” The Norweigan director mentioned he was as a result of he dreamed about making a sci-fi movie and loved the twist of “Ares” bringing the Grid into the actual world.

Leto and Bridges are each Oscar winners, and Rønning is an Oscar nominee. ___
