Las Vegas educator recounts expertise in Israel throughout ‘12-Day War’

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A Las Vegas lady shared her firsthand expertise of being caught in the course of a battle.

Hayley Wizig, Household and Training Director at Congregation Ner Tamid in Henderson, traveled to Israel in June simply as tensions erupted into what many are calling the “12-Day War.”

“We got there on June 6th, we were actually supposed to be leaving the day that everything started,” Wizig mentioned. “We were supposed to be leaving on the 13th, and our flight was supposed to be at noon, but then the sirens went off at three in the morning.”

What started as a visit to attach with household and heritage rapidly become a life-altering expertise. As missile sirens blared throughout the area, Wizig discovered herself navigating a fancy and harmful state of affairs. Israeli airspace shut down, delaying her return flight indefinitely.

Throughout that point issues escalated after the US launched airstrikes inside Iran, prompting fears of broader regional retaliation.

Wizig and others took shelter in a number of protected rooms listening to the iron dome intercept rockets overhead.  “It is a bit surreal knowing that we are living through history as it’s happening,” Wizig wrote. “It’s tragic to hear about the deaths and injuries that are happening further north. It’s stressful knowing that we can’t safely return to the U.S. It’s frustrating that the U.S. embassy can’t really do anything for us unless the U.S. enters the war. But we’re safe, we’re well taken care of, and we’re all in this together.”

Wizig finally secured a seat on a coordinated “rescue flight” out of Tel Aviv, routed by Cyprus and Athens, earlier than lastly returning residence to Las Vegas. 

Wizig is utilizing her expertise to encourage understanding, empathy, and neighborhood resilience.
