The SPARK Camp (College students Pursuing Developments in Actual-World Information) is coaching middle-schoolers to turn out to be the subsequent heartbeat of well being care.
“I’ve always been very passionate about going into the health care system,” stated pupil Alexi Holdridge. “So far, I’ve learned about S-BAR (Situation, Background, Assessment, and Recommendation) and about how to treat babies, how to treat dummies, and how to check for pulse.”

“They get to be immersed in health care. They get to use practical skills. They get to learn how to triage, how to do fun stuff like taking temperatures, blood pressure, engaging with patients,” Amy Runge, UMC’s medical nurse supervisor, stated.
On Thursday, the longer term professionals bought hands-on with CPR certification. SPARK camp is a joint effort between the Nightingale Basis, UMC, and the Clark County Faculty District with a purpose to nurture the subsequent technology of hospital leaders and healthcare heroes.
“There are so many possibilities in health care,” Runge stated.

“The goal is we start young by getting students aware and sparking interest,” CJ Chidozie, Nightingale Basis neighborhood outreach specialist, stated. “Oftentimes, students don’t realize that there are opportunities that they can start doing while in high school to help prepare for nursing school.”
However the way forward for well being care is not only about medical doctors and nurses.
“We just get this false narrative that ‘I can be a nurse, or I can be a doctor,’ and we get to show them all that you can be in the world of health care,” Runge stated. “We need all types of individuals to run health care and run a hospital … . We have different individuals that are administrative in nature. We have individuals at our hospitals who are dieticians, who are child life specialists, who are physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech and language pathologists — all different areas of health care.”
For Alexi, that calling is evident — impressed by a present and pushed by a dream.
“I want to go into neurosurgery, which is very ambitious, but I’m very dedicated,” she stated. “I’m really into it because of Grey’s Anatomy and also because I think it’s really cool how the brain works, and I want to learn a lot more about it.”
The Nightingale Basis additionally affords scholarships for nursing college students and outreach packages to center and highschool college students — all a part of a rising effort to strengthen Nevada’s well being care workforce beginning younger.
